On the trail of Nepal's flora

چکیده

for training the next generation of scientists? Career paths and scientific training in the United States probably need to evolve to meet current challenges. It is generally agreed that alternative (nonacademic) careers in science should be bolstered, but graduate school and postdoctoral training are getting longer as the bar for achieving a ‘successful story’ for publication becomes ever higher. Technology development also is acknowledged to be a driver for the biological sciences, but individuals with such interests do not have clear career paths and grant support in the academic system. We also need to consider ways of supporting young academic scientists who are willing to try creative and risky experiments, rather than a safe and guaranteed trail of papers. I am not sure that I have answers to these issues, but I think that it is time to try some ‘experiments’ in education and not be complacent with the status quo that has been in operation for decades.

Figs and fig wasps

The current project builds on previous grants under the Darwin Initiative that focused on Nepal's flora, a key one of which dealt with plant information and technology transfer, run by the Natural History Museum in London. But the current project is much more ambitious. Although only funded for three years at present, the team hopes funds will be made available for the estimated 15 years it wil...

Effects of Skid Trail Slope and Ground Skidding on Soil Disturbance

The effects of traffic frequency and skid trail slope on dry bulk density, litter mass and rutting are examined. Treatments included a combination of four different traffic frequencies (3, 7, 14, and 20 passes of a rubber skidder) and three levels of slope ( 20%.) The results showed that dry bulk density, rut depth and soil displacement increased with the increase of traffic frequency and slop...

Increased Expression of TRAIL and Its Receptors on Peripheral T-Cells in Type 1 Diabetic Patients

Background: Type-I diabetes is an autoimmune inflammatory disease in which pancreatic ß-cells are selectively destroyed by infiltrating cells. TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) is a type-II membrane protein of the TNF superfamily which is expressed in different tissues, including pancreas and lymphocytes. In humans, TRAIL interacts with four membrane receptors. TRAIL-R1 and TRAIL-R2...

Synergistic Effect of Subtoxic-dose Cisplatin and TRAIL to Mediate Apoptosis by Down-regulating Decoy Receptor 2 and Up-regulating Caspase-8, Caspase-9 and Bax Expression on NCI-H460 and A549 Cells

Objective(s): Although tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) can selectively induce apoptosis in tumor cells, more than half of tumors including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) exhibit TRAIL-resistance. The purpose of this study was to determine whether subtoxic-dose cisplatin and TRAIL could synergistically enhance apoptosis on NSCLC cells and investigate its under...

Cloning and Expression of TNF Related Apoptosis Inducing Ligand in Nicotiana tabacum

Molecular farming has been considered as a secure and economical approach for production of biopharmaceuticals. Human TNF Related Apoptosis Inducing Ligand (TRAIL) as a promising biopharmaceutical candidate has been produced in different expression hosts. However, little attention has been paid to molecular farming of the TRAIL in spite of numerous advantages of plant expression systems. Theref...
